A good rule of thumb is twenty five to thirty percent of your monthly take home pay.

When biding on a home the earnest money deposit shows the seller that you’re serious about purchasing a home. When the transaction is finalized funds are put towards your down payment. If the earnest money exceeds the down payment the buyer will get the difference back at closing
